We believe everyone should have peace of mind over their income, regardless of their occupation. Some clients in riskier jobs – like tradespeople, nurses and electricians – can be more expensive to insure, and need tailored cover. 

Our Personal Sick Pay offers specialist income protection aimed specifically to these clients. It’s built with a number of features with them in mind:

  • Weekly or monthly claim benefit payment.
  • Age costed premiums.
  • Personal Sick Pay £1,000 guarantee.
  • Own occupation definition of sickness.

Important information

Our tailored support places your client at the heart of our offering – giving them peace of mind when it’s needed most. Here are some important things you should know about our Personal Sick Pay:

  • We won’t pay a claim if your client becomes unemployed or is made redundant.
  • If your client chooses level cover, it won’t keep up with inflation and could buy less in the future. 
  • We won’t pay out in the event of a normal pregnancy.
  • Clients can insure up to 60% of their earnings at outset – subject to a minimum amount of cover of £6,000 a year (£500 a month) and a maximum of £100,000 a year (£8,333 a month).
  • We won’t pay out if your client isn't working for any reason, other than an illness or accident. For example, lockdown, quarantine, periods of mandatory or precautionary isolation, or suspension from work.
  • If your client chooses a day 1 or week 1 waiting period, we won’t pay a claim due to symptoms or complications of COVID-19 or other coronaviruses, respiratory tract infection, cold or flu if your client is unable to work for less than 4 weeks. If they’re unable to work beyond 4 weeks we’ll consider their claim and backdate any claim payments to start from the end of their waiting period. We’ll review this exclusion every year and if we can improve or remove it, we’ll let them know. This will be detailed in their Policy Schedule.
  • If your client stops paying their premiums, their cover may stop.
  • The minimum term is 5 years. The policy must end before your client reaches the age of 70.
  • The policy won’t pay out if your client is ill but continues to work.
  • Benefits paid at claim may reduce any state benefits your client might be entitled to.
  • To apply, your client needs to have been registered with a GP and lived in the UK for at least the last two continuous years, immediately before they take the policy out.
  • There is no cash value at any time.

Level cover

Level cover offers a fixed amount of cover – it won’t change and won’t keep up with inflation. This means your client won’t be able buy as much with their money in the future, compared to today.

Inflation-linked cover

Here, the amount of cover will increase in-line with inflation. We then re-calculate the premium to match the new amount of cover – the premium will increase in-line with inflation.

Budget Personal Sick Pay

This is a more affordable option – it works in the same way as our standard policy, but we’ll only pay your client for a maximum of 24 months for a single claim.

Types of premium


Guaranteed future prices

If your client's insurance has guaranteed future prices, the price they'll pay in the future for each £1 of Personal Sick Pay is guaranteed to go up each year at the rate set out in the Guaranteed Future Price table.

If your clients choose guaranteed future prices, the insurance will cost a bit more to begin with. They'll know exactly what it will cost in the future and we can’t change what is set out in the table.

Reviewable future prices

If your client's insurance has reviewable future prices, then the price they'll pay in the future for each £1 of Personal Sick Pay is guaranteed to go up each year at the rate set out in the Reviewable Future Price table for the first 5 years.

After that, we’ll review the prices in the table every 5 years and the amounts quoted in the table could change (either up or down).

Personal Sick Pay forms part of our Flexible Protection Plan – the only menu plan in the market that offers specialist income protection for clients in riskier occupations.
